Budget: £3000 inc. VAT

Requirements: Front computer and DVD player plug in point, custom drop projection screen, projector must not interfere with sight lines of the church

Additional points to note: Walls are all plastered and painted white. No obvious route from floor to ceiling other than rear wall. Power cable can be easily run into ceiling space from power distribution board on rear wall.

Solution:

Rather than run 50+ metres of cable for what should have been a 5 metre cable run we opted for a wireless projection system that also acted as a simple switcher allowing them to run DVD and Computer and switch between the 2 with a push of a button.

The time and materials saved by not having to run any cables between source and projector offset the cost of the wireless system and also brought the project back in to budget.

When Ripley St Thomas asked us to propose a projection solution for the grade II listed chapel they were looking for a screen that wouldn't obscure the historic stained glass windows. We proposed a number of possible solutions, but the winner was an 8' x 6' toughened safety glass screen with an active LCD layer bonded onto the glass. This allows the screen to be turned on and off remotely resulting in a either a clear or opaque screen.  A 6000 lumen projector is then used to rear project onto the screen.

Poor sight lines from the side aisle necessitated the fitting of a more conventional screen, although one with a seven metre drop before the actual screen is then opened. The cable drop makes sure that we don't block the sight line (or the sound) of the pipe organ.

A new console to accommodate the sound equipment and projection control was also installed. As extra storage space was required for mic stands and cables we constructed our biggest cabinet to date - the entire length of one of the pews in the side aisle. Faculty had been obtained to remove two pews to allow for more space at the front of the aisle and to accommodate the console at the rear and the timber from these pews was recycled to make part of the cabinet. Our expert cabinet maker ensured a perfect match in colour and style to the existing woodwork.

With a minimal technical specification to work to, and obviously no budget, we pulled out all the stops to make it an enjoyable evening for all. The red carpet entrance, buffet and a wide variety of musical acts meant it was a great event for the many people that turned up to pack out the venue.

A limited power supply at the venue  necessitated careful choice of lighting fixtures and sound equipment so that we didn't overload the venue ring main.

Sound was from our extensive stock of HK speaker systems (the Elias PX system with D.A.R.T.s for monitors in this case) with mixing from our Midas Venice desk. Numerous radio mics and vocal and instrument mics were also supplied.

Although it was meant to be a dry hire, the engineer who volunteered for the evening was unable to attend at the last minute so we stepped in and assisted the numerous acts and bands for the soundchecks, after which the event manager (who was also MC) was able to take over.

With a show time of 7pm till 1am it was a very busy, fun-filled evening with talented acts following on all night.

Then all we had to do was pack away and take it all home..

Working with Affinity Events, Reelife provided Technical Support for the recent Marriage Unlocked Tour for Care for the Family. Comprising 5 consecutive nights in Exeter, Gloucester, Sheffield, Edinburgh and Belfast our engineer operated sound, lighting and audio visual for the evening. The short turn-around from Edinburgh to Belfast necessitated use of a duplicate set of equipment supplied from the Reelife hire stock and delivered by one of our drivers along with the resource material from Care for the Family.
